Vanilla



Vanilla is a flavoring, and in its pure form, known as vanillin, is derived from vining orchids. It is native to Mexico, although it‘s now grown throughout the tropics. Madagascar is the largest producer.

There are four main commercial options for natural vanilla; whole bean, powder, paste,and extract. We offer you two of the four and only one brand; Nielsen-Massey Bourbon Vanilla, the best of the best at The City Pantry. Bourbon vanilla simply means it comes to you from the Indian Ocean islands of Madagascar, Comoros, or Reunion.

The use of vanilla is primarily in baking ; flavoring cakes, cookies, creams, and other pastries.The bean itself can be split in half exposing the vanilla seeds. From the producer of the world's best vanilla, each Nielson-Massey vanilla pod requires a labor-intensive 3 to 6 month curing process, reflected in their cost.

These quality pods may be sliced down the center, exposing the vanilla seeds themselves, often referred to as "vanilla caviar". By scraping the seed paste out of the pod, it can then be added to warm milk or cream, infusing its flavor to the liquid, then substituted into your favorite recipe.
